***What is between the notes B and C? The only way mathematics can function is if there are two points you can delineate, thereby creating a relationship. No matter how far you subdivide any two numbers, you will always have a gap or space between the digits. The 2 depends upon the 1 for its very existence. But without the space between 1 and 2 there can be no mathematics.

***And there is something in-between. We know this because mathematics work. We wouldn’t have an international space station, or computers, or jet airplanes, or Large Hadron Colliders if numbers were not real and functional. So mathematics is a medium which derives its whole meaning and existence from the space between two fixed points. Seen from this point of view the real mistake we are making is putting the emphasis on the wrong side.

***The true power of mathematics is not the numbers themselves, but the infinite space between them. And if we can recognize the true power of mathematics as residing in the space between the numbers, we can also begin to imagine the true power and potential of music to be in the space between the notes. There is an infinity between B and C, exactly as there is an infinity between 1 and 2. In terms of evolutionary principles, we’ve reached the moment where music has crawled up on land from out of the ocean and has asked for legs and lungs to replace its fins and gills. It is that substantial.
